A Very Good Question

  1. Because if they can make 'widgets' better and **cheaper** than you can, you would be a mug not to buy them.

And, incidentally, all those poor people you never stop crying about will be better off!

In the meantime you can use your capital and your workforce to make things at a price other people want.

  2. Exactly how are poor people better off by exporting jobs they could have to China (and other places)?

  3. Because they are released to work on more productive items which the Chinese don't make.

And they are better off because the 'widgets' they need are nowhere near as expensive as those produced in a Pittsburgh factory under union control.

  4. But when the factories are sent to China, all that is left are the minimum wage service jobs -- jobs that won't even pay for a decent standard of living, and certainly won't provide the money to buy those Chinese "widgets" (no matter how cheap they are).
